Open Livingroom

One Space. Four Completely Different Lighting Scenes.

Layered lighting gives each fixture a purpose and Lutron lighting control brings those layers together. Instead of adjusting several dimmers every time the room is used differently, personalized scenes can change multiple lighting zones at once with a single keypad press.

ENTERTAIN

Balance the Entire Space

Press Entertain to create a more even lighting composition across the kitchen, dining, and living areas. Architectural and accent lighting can become more prominent while harsh task lighting is softened.

The space remains bright enough for guests to move comfortably while highlighting cabinetry, artwork, furnishings, and architectural details throughout the room.

COOKING

Bright Light Where You Need It

Press Cooking and the kitchen becomes the priority. Downlights and task lighting over counters and work surfaces increase for visibility, while lighting in the surrounding dining and living areas can remain at a lower level.

The result is a bright, functional workspace without unnecessarily lighting the entire open floor plan at full intensity.

DINNER

Shift the Focus to the Dining Table

Press Dinner and the lighting hierarchy changes. The dining table and decorative fixtures become the visual focus while brighter kitchen task lighting is reduced.

Instead of every fixture competing for attention, the lighting guides the eye toward the dining area and creates a more comfortable atmosphere for the meal.

RELAX

Lower the Intensity. Keep the Depth.

Press Relax and the room becomes quieter without simply turning the lights off. General lighting is reduced while selected accent, cove, cabinet, or decorative lighting can remain on at lower levels.

The different layers preserve depth and visual interest while creating a softer environment for the end of the evening.

Modern Living Room

A Coordinated Layered-Lighting Experience

  • Ambient, Task, and Accent Lighting: Layered lighting combines general illumination, focused task lighting, and accent lighting so each part of the room has a purpose.

  • Custom HomeWorks Scenes: Multiple lighting zones can be programmed together so one command changes the balance of light throughout an open-concept space.

  • One-Touch Keypad Control: Personalized scenes such as Cooking, Dinner, Entertain, and Relax can be activated from a programmed Lutron keypad.

  • Different Light for Different Activities: A Cooking scene can increase light over countertops and work surfaces, while a Dinner scene can reduce kitchen lighting and shift attention toward the dining area.

  • Independent Zone Control: Recessed lighting, pendants, under-cabinet lighting, decorative fixtures, cove lighting, and accent fixtures can be controlled at different levels instead of operating as one group.

  • Personalized Scene Levels: Each lighting layer can be adjusted during commissioning so the finished scenes reflect how the homeowner actually uses the room.

  • Manual Control Still Available: A programmed scene does not lock the homeowner into one setting. Individual lights and other scenes can still be selected whenever desired.

  • Whole-Home Expansion: Layered-lighting scenes can extend beyond one room, allowing lighting throughout connected kitchen, dining, living, entertaining, and circulation spaces to respond together.

  • Designed Around the Architecture: Proper layered lighting considers cabinetry, artwork, furniture, work surfaces, ceiling details, decorative fixtures, and architectural features rather than simply adding more recessed lights.

Professional Layered Lighting Design and Programming

A successful layered-lighting system starts with more than selecting attractive fixtures. The lighting loads need to be divided into the right control zones, fixture placement must support the architecture, and each scene needs to be programmed so ambient, task, and accent lighting work together instead of competing with one another.
